Welcome to Stromness Academy

It is a privilege to lead Stromness Academy, described by an inspector as “a small school which delivers a lot”. Our school vision includes a desire to be a positive, purposeful place of which we can be proud, and I am certainly proud of the many and varied activities and achievements in and out of the classroom which you will see reflected on this website and our social media.

Orkney has been repeatedly crowned the best place to live in the UK; at Stromness Academy, we are proud of the contribution our school, pupils and community make to that title. The relatively small size of our school (approx. 350 on roll) means we know our pupils well, and are able to be flexible to meet their needs. Our curriculum is designed to give young people the opportunity to discover their talents and choose courses which best suit their interests, aptitudes and goals. The Orkney Offer, which provides access to courses at campuses across Orkney, means there is an impressively rich variety of courses available to our pupils.

But a school is so much more than its curriculum. Our young people also learn and develop through a wide range of extra-curricular activities and leadership opportunities, through our partnerships with local employers and community organisations, and through the school ethos embodied in their interactions with those around them. Stromness is a unique and special place. Our school logo, with its motto from the seal of the Burgh of Stromness, ‘per mare’ – by the sea, references our Norse and coastal heritage. Our newer strap-line Navigate to success reflects our desire to maintain this link with our history and local culture, whilst equipping our young people to succeed in the modern world.
