Food for thought, life and wellbeing is a daily concept for the team of Home Economics specialists here at Stromness Academy; using practical work to demonstrate theory.
From S1 to S6, students are given the opportunity to develop an understanding of ingredients, learn basic life skills and demonstrate a creative flair. Non practical lessons continue the interactive theme; sensory analysis, taste testing and product evaluation to name but a few.
The Fashion & Textile course is a highly practical subject which will allow you to show off your creativity. The course begins with all the basics to build up confidence. You will then start to learn about various techniques which will allow you to create a variety of fashion and textiles items which you can then design yourself. Examples of items that you will make are fleece hats, pencil cases, cushions, tote bags, skirts and pyjamas bottoms.

Stromness Academy

On Monday 21st June, pupils took part in their first Sports day since 2019, with great success! Pupils in every year group took part in athletics, rounders, football, hockey, fun events, netball, badminton, dodgeball and volleyball. It was great to see such healthy competition with pupils trying their best to win for their house and displaying excellent sporting conduct at the same time. In S2, R house ran out the winners with a particularly strong showing in the Athletics. In S3, M ran out the victors with particularly strong results in Badminton and Football. In S4, R won with strong results in Athletics and Fun Events. In S5/6, T took the victory after a slightly stronger showing in Athletics than other houses. Overall, R took home the Phil Mackay trophy with a winning total of 763 points, M were in 2nd place with 710 points and T in 3rd with 694 points. Well done to R!Finally, a special mention to Max Linklater who broke the S3 high jump record with a height of 1.56m.
