Senior Phase (S4-6)
BGE S1 – 3
In S1 pupils study French and German with class time split evenly between the two languages. Towards the end of that first yea, pupils are given the opportunity to tell us which one of the two languages they would like to take forward as the first foreign language for the remainder of BGE. Class time in S2 and S3 is divided into 2 periods a week in the first foreign language and 1 period a week for the second. In S3 pupils can choose to extend their time in the second foreign language – this is a ‘booster course’ for those considering taking both languages in Senior Phase.
The department subscribes to the digital courses that support the Studio and Stimmt courses published by Pearson and in S1 and S2 these materials form the basis of our language courses.
Our S3 course in the first foreign language is designed to prepare pupils for the transition to Senior Phase and whilst we do still use elements from the Studio and Stimmt courses, materials are also drawn from a range of other sources.
Getting to know the countries where French and German are spoken are key parts of our courses at all levels- this includes film studies as well as various mini projects with cultural themes.
