School Transport

Orkney Islands Council provides school transport for pupils who live beyond statutory walking distance from school, and almost 80% of Stromness Academy pupils travel to school by bus. Full details of School Transport including entitlement, catchment areas, collection/drop off points, code of conduct and provision for pupils with additional support needs is available on the following webpage: www.orkney.gov.uk/Service-Directory/S/School-Transport.htm

Any queries with regards to Stromness Academy school transport can be addressed to Graeme Horne, Business Manager at Stromness Academy.

School Transport in Adverse Weather

Orkney Islands Council Education Department coordinate events should the weather adversely affect school transport. Every effort is made to keep schools open, whether or not our conveyors are able to provide transport.

If there is bad weather, please see the following for school transport information:

  • OIC School Transport Facebook page should be your first stop for information regarding transport changes.
  • The Facebook page is linked to Twitter @OrkneyCouncil and both are updated as soon as information is available; this can be as early as 0615.
  • Information is passed to BBC Radio Orkney for broadcasting on their programme at 0730 (on 93.7 FM) and also posted on their Facebook page. Radio Orkney will also be notified if there is disruption to transport throughout their programme, however detailed information on specific routes will not be provided.
  • Stromness Academy Facebook Page will also post updates.

If adverse weather causes changes to transport arise during the school day, parents will be notified by the school, using our usual text/email systems. Parents must ensure that they notify the school of any changes to contact details to ensure that they receive this information.

Discipline on School Transport

Discipline on School Transport is a joint responsibility involving the school, the Education, Leisure and Housing Team, parents and transport operators: serious misconduct can result in a pupil being denied the right to travel. We rely on all concerned to understand that school rules apply on the bus/boat just as they do during the school day. Any concerns should be reported to your child’s Guidance Teacher.
