A fantastic evening tonight at the Stromness Academy Parent Council fundraising quiz at the Harray Community Centre! Much fun, laughter and brain teasing as parents, pupils, friends and family got together. A massive thank you to all involved for their planning, hard work and contributions to a great evenings entertainment, yummy three course supper and great prizes. Leadership Opportunities in PE at Stromness Academy

PE staff offer two leadership courses during the school year.

  • I Can Lead for S3 pupils during class time. This is a twelve hour course which was introduced this session, led by Michael Swanney our Active Schools Coordinator. Pupils also do five hours of personal leadership experience in or out of school.
  • Level 5 Qualification in Community Sports Leadership/Level 5 Qualification in Sports Leadership for S5/6 pupils as part of the Wider Achievement programme. This takes place during class time, two lessons per week for the duration of the school year, plus ten hours of leadership experience in or out of school. This course is worth 7 SCQF credit points.

Pupils who take part in these courses have the opportunity to,

  • Lead Badminton/Hockey/Football festivals for primary pupils
  • Lead activities at P7 Transition Sports
  • Help out at sports days (in SA and our associated primary schools)
  • Lead Friday Activities at SA
  • Lead lunchtime activities/extra-curricular activities
  • Lead activities in our associated primary schools and in the wider community
  • S5/6 pupils support BGE core PE classes

Young Ambassador Programme

This is a national leadership programme and is supported by Michael Swanney (Active Schools). We currently have eight Young Ambassadors in the school and they,

  • Attended YA conference in Inverness
  • Are members of the School Sports Committee which support our School of Sport nomination
  • Help out at the Orkney Sports Awards
  • Lead Badminton/Hockey/Football festivals for primary pupils
  • Lead activities at P7 Transition Sports
  • Help out at sports days (in SA and our associated primary schools)
  • Lead Friday Activities at SA and our associated primary schools
  • Lead lunchtime activities
  • Deliver PE lessons in Primary Schools

S2/3 pupils apply to become a Young Ambassador – we can only offer this to two pupils per session. The pupils find out about the Young Ambassador programme at an assembly in June, pupils complete application forms, they are interviewed (PE staff/M Swanney are the interviewers) and further discussion about candidates takes place with Guidance staff. This process is completed by the end of term as the chosen Young Ambassadors attend the YA conference in September.

Sports Ambassadors

Pupils who are not selected to become a Young Ambassador will be considered for a Sports Ambassador position. The role of a Sports Ambassador is very similar to a Young Ambassador,

  • Lead Badminton/Hockey/Football festivals for primary pupils
  • Lead activities at P7 Transition Sports
  • Help out at sports days (in SA and our associated primary schools)
  • Lead Friday Activities (in SA and our associated primary schools)
  • Lead lunchtime activities

They are encouraged to take the I Can Lead course in S3 to develop their leadership skills.

Events/Opportunities for Leadership

Pupils are invited to help out at the various sporting events/festivals throughout the year. We use pupils from different year groups to give as many pupils as possible the opportunity to help/lead these events.

Sports Captain

To help with the smooth running of our leadership programme a Sports Captain is elected using a similar process as is used to elect our Young Ambassadors. Our Sports Captain will,

  • Be a role model for others within the school
  • Attend meetings with PE staff and Active School staff – liaise between staff and the schools’ Sports Ambassadors/Sports Leaders
  • Chair the Stromness Academy Sports Committee
  • Support our younger Sports’ Ambassadors to fulfil their roles
  • Organise/help with the running of inter-house activities, lunchtime and after-school activities
  • Take a lead role in organising/helping at primary school sporting events, including the Primary 7 Transition Sports Day
